Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription weight loss medication approved by the FDA for chronic weight management. However, the high cost of Wegovy without insurance can be a major concern when seeking treatment.
The US, the largest pharmaceutical market in the world, is also one of the most affected, with more than 36% of adult Americans classified as obese. As weight-related health risks continue to rise, access to effective and affordable treatments has become more urgent than ever.
This article explains Wegovy’s pricing with and without insurance, including monthly costs, savings programs, affordable alternatives, and whether Wegovy is cost-effective for weight loss.
How Much Does Wegovy Cost Without Insurance?
The cost of Wegovy without insurance can be substantial. As of 2025, Wegovy has a list price of $1,349.02 per package (four prefilled injection pens) in the US. However, the actual retail price can vary, ranging from $1,500 to $1,800.
To better understand its financial impact, let’s break down the cost.
Cost Per Injection
Since Wegovy is a once-weekly injection, you’ll need four doses per month. Here’s what that breaks down to per injection:
-
- At the list price of $1,349.02 per month, each Wegovy injection costs around $337.26.
- If you’re paying $1,500 per month, each injection costs approximately $375.00.
- At the higher retail price of $1,800 per month, each injection will cost $450.00.
Cost Per Month
Wegovy’s price per month depends on where you get your prescription filled. Here are some popular pharmacies in the US that sell Wegovy:
| Pharmacy | Wegovy Monthly Cost |
|---|---|
| CVS | $1,590 |
| Walgreens | $1,619 |
| Walmart | $1,620 |
| Rite Aid | $1,781 |
Cost Per Year
If you stay on Wegovy for a full year, the cost can add up quickly. Here’s what you might expect to pay annually:
-
- At the list price, your yearly cost would be around $17,547.52.
- If you’re paying $1,500 per month, that adds up to $18,000 per year.
- At the higher end of $1,800 per month, your total yearly cost would be $21,600.
Factors That Influence the Cost of Wegovy
Several factors impact how much Wegovy is out of pocket:
1. Pharmacy Choice
Prices can vary significantly between large-chain pharmacies, independent drugstores, and online retailers. Big chains often negotiate lower prices, while smaller pharmacies may have higher markups due to lower purchasing power.
2. Location & State Regulations
The price of Wegovy isn’t the same everywhere. Some states have stricter drug pricing rules, while regional supply and demand also play a role. In areas with fewer pharmacies or high demand, prices may be higher.
3. Insurance & Coverage Gaps
Not all insurance plans cover Wegovy, and those that do may require prior authorization or only cover it for specific conditions. Some people may face high copays, while others may need to pay out-of-pocket.
4. Discounts & Savings Programs
Novo Nordisk offers savings programs for eligible patients, and some third-party coupon sites can help lower costs. For instance, with a GoodRx coupon, Wegovy is available for as low as $1,361.56, which is 17% off the average retail price of $1,638.99.
How Much Is Wegovy With Insurance?

Wegovy’s cost with insurance can vary based on your coverage. Here’s how different types of insurance handle it:
Private Insurance (Employer-Sponsored & Marketplace Plans)
Many private insurance companies may cover Wegovy, but it often requires prior authorization and meeting specific medical criteria. If covered, your copay or coinsurance could be anywhere from $25 to $150 per month, depending on your plan’s tier pricing.
Some insurers that may offer coverage include:
-
- Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Aetna
- Cigna
- UnitedHealthcare
However, employer-sponsored plans can choose whether or not to cover weight-loss medications, so you should check directly with your insurance provider.
Medicare Coverage
Medicare does not cover Wegovy if prescribed for weight loss, as weight-loss drugs are excluded under the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003.
As of March 2024, the FDA has approved Wegovy to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with obesity or overweight and cardiovascular disease. Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan can now cover Wegovy for patients who meet these criteria.
However, since Wegovy is classified as a specialty tier medication, your out-of-pocket costs will be higher than regular prescriptions. You’ll likely have to pay between 25% and 33% of the cost as coinsurance. That means your monthly cost for Wegovy could range from $325 to $430.
You’ll keep paying this amount until you reach your annual out-of-pocket drug spending limit. In 2025, the limit drops to $2,000 (thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act). Once you reach that limit, you won’t have to pay any more for the rest of the year.
Since coverage details vary, it’s best to check with your Medicare plan to confirm how much is Wegovy after insurance.
Medicaid Coverage
Medicaid coverage varies by state. Some states may cover Wegovy under their preferred drug list, while others may require proof of medical necessity before approval. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 13 state Medicaid programs cover GLP-1s for obesity treatment. These states include:
-
- California
- Delaware
- Kansas
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Mississippi
- New Hampshire
- North Carolina
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- Virginia
- Wisconsin
However, you’ll likely need to meet certain requirements before getting approved, such as:
-
- Prior Authorization: 11 out of 12 states require your doctor to get approval before prescribing the medication.
-
- BMI Requirements: 11 out of 12 states require you to have a BMI of 30+ (or 27+ with a weight-related condition).
-
- Limited Drug Options: While 11 states cover all three GLP-1 weight-loss drugs (Wegovy, Saxenda, and Zepbound), others may limit which ones they approve.
Given the variability in coverage, your best option is to check with your state’s Medicaid program to see if it’s covered and what requirements you need to meet. If covered, your copay might be as low as $0 per month.
TRICARE (Military Insurance)
TRICARE, the health insurance program for US military members, veterans, and their families, covers obesity treatment under TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select, even if obesity is the only or primary condition being treated.
Contact TRICARE to confirm coverage details if you or a family member are TRICARE beneficiaries. If covered, expect to pay around $38 per month, depending on your TRICARE plan.
Cost of Wegovy vs. Other Weight Loss Medications
Wegovy can be expensive without insurance. If you’re considering alternative options, here’s how it compares to other weight loss medications:
| Medication | Monthly Cost | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Wegovy | $1,500 – $1,800 | GLP-1 Agonist |
| Saxenda | $1,500 – $1,700 | GLP-1 Agonist |
| Zepbound | $1,200 – $1,300 | GIP/GLP-1 Agonist |
| Contrave | $700 – $800 | Combination Therapy |
Wegovy is one of the most expensive weight loss medications, but clinical trials have shown it leads to greater weight loss than older treatments. However, if you’re considering Zepbound, a 2024 study found that more patients taking it achieved major weight loss milestones, such as:
-
- 76% more likely to lose 5% of their weight
- 2.5 times more likely to lose 10% of their weight
- 3.2 times more likely to lose 15% of their weight
Is There a Generic Version of Wegovy?

Right now, there’s no generic version of Wegovy available in the US or any other country. Novo Nordisk holds the patents for its formulation and use in weight management, meaning no other company can legally produce an equivalent until those patents expire or a licensed generic is approved.
If that happens, generic versions could enter the market, but this process takes time. It could be years before any changes occur, and any updates would come from official sources.
That said, Novo Nordisk’s patents for Wegovy are set to expire at different times worldwide. According to reports, China will be in 2026, Japan and Europe will be in 2031, and the US will be in 2032.
In 2024, Indian and Chinese pharmaceutical companies began developing versions of semaglutide. At least 11 Chinese firms have semaglutide drug candidates in the final stages of clinical trials. Hangzhou Jiuyuan Gene Engineering has developed a treatment comparable to Ozempic and applied for approval in April, with expectations of receiving it in the second half of 2025.

Similarly, Indian drugmaker Biocon is developing its own version of Wegovy, with clinical trials expected to begin this year. The Bengaluru-based company, which generates most of its revenue from foreign markets such as the US, also plans to launch generic versions of Wegovy in Brazil, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia.
This reflects a larger trend. These pharmaceutical firms are challenging Novo Nordisk by leveraging lower production costs and more flexible regulations. If they succeed, it could reshape the global market for diabetes and obesity treatments.
Cheapest Ways to Get Wegovy Without Insurance
Although Wegovy is costly, there are several cost-saving strategies that can help make Wegovy more affordable:
1. Manufacturer Savings Programs
Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegovy, offers a savings card program with two main options:
-
- If your insurance covers Wegovy: You may pay as little as $0 per month, provided your out-of-pocket cost is $849 or less. The savings card can offer up to $225 off per month.
-
- If your insurance doesn’t cover Wegovy or you’re uninsured: You might qualify to receive Wegovy for $650 per month. In this case, your prescription is processed outside of insurance and won’t count toward deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums.
To determine your eligibility and apply, visit the Wegovy Savings page.
2. Pharmacy Discount Cards
Programs like GoodRx, SingleCare, and WellRx offer price reductions on prescription medications. Visit the discount card website and search for Wegovy to compare local pharmacy prices. Once you find the best deal, show the coupon to your pharmacist to receive an instant discount.
3. Prescription Assistance Programs
Organizations like NeedyMeds and the PAN Foundation help patients with financial difficulties access expensive medications. Check your eligibility based on your income and insurance status, then submit an application with proof of financial need. If approved, you could receive Wegovy at a significantly reduced price or even for free.
4. Canadian Pharmacies
If you’re looking for a more affordable way to get Wegovy, Pharma Giant, an online Canadian pharmacy partner, offers a cost-effective and convenient solution for you.
At Pharma Giant, Wegovy starts at just $609–that’s more than 50% off the typical retail price in the US. You can save even more with coupons, bulk orders, and as a new customer, you’ll get an extra 10% off with the code PGSAVE10.
Is Wegovy Worth the Cost Without Insurance?
A study in 2022 evaluated whether Wegovy is worth the cost compared to other weight loss treatments in the US. The researchers compared Wegovy to:
-
- No treatment
- Diet and exercise alone
- Three other weight-loss drugs (liraglutide 3 mg, phentermine-topiramate, and naltrexone-bupropion)
Results showed that Wegovy led to better health outcomes but also increased costs compared to other treatments. The extra cost ranged from $3,254 to $25,086 over 30 years. However, based on a willingness-to-pay threshold, Wegovy was still cost-effective compared to all alternatives.
When testing different scenarios (such as how long patients stayed on treatment and weight regain rates), Wegovy was found to be cost-effective 67% to 100% of the time.
Final Thoughts
Wegovy is an effective weight-loss medication, but without insurance, it comes at a steep price. You could be paying anywhere from $1,500 to $1,800 per month, adding up to over $21,000 per year. Even with insurance, coverage varies, and you may still face high out-of-pocket costs.
To lower the expense, check if you qualify for manufacturer savings programs, pharmacy discount cards, or patient assistance programs. You can also explore cheaper alternatives, like purchasing Wegovy from a Canadian pharmacy such as Pharma Giant, where prices start at $609.
Since no generic version is available yet, prices won’t drop anytime soon. If you’re considering Wegovy, make sure to compare costs, look for discounts, and explore all options before committing.
