What is Admelog?

Admelog (insulin lispro) is a type of insulin used to help control high blood sugar levels in both adults and children with diabetes.

Admelog is a rapid-acting human insulin that enhances blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 diabetes and in adults and children (3 years and older) with Type 1 diabetes.

It is a fast-acting insulin, meaning it starts working quickly to lower blood sugar.

Do not use Admelog during an episode of hypoglycemia or if you’ve had a hypersensitivity reaction to insulin lispro or any ingredients.

Before starting Admelog, inform your healthcare provider if you have liver or kidney problems, are taking certain other medicines, or have heart issues.

It’s also important to discuss Admelog with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Make sure to tell your doctor about all the medicines and supplements you are taking.

How Does Admelog Work?

Admelog helps lower blood sugar levels by acting like natural insulin in your body.

It works quickly to move sugar from your blood into your muscles and fat, where it can be used for energy.

Admelog also helps stop your liver from making too much sugar. By doing this, it helps keep your blood sugar levels in a healthier range.

After you inject Admelog, it starts working within 15 to 30 minutes, reaching its peak effect around 1 to 2 hours later.

This quick action helps manage blood sugar levels effectively, especially around mealtime.

Dosage Information and Usage

Dosage Form and Strengths of Admelog

Injection Concentration: 100 units/mL (U-100)

Available Forms:

  • 10 mL multiple-dose vials
  • 3 mL multiple-dose vials
  • 3 mL SoloStar single-patient-use prefilled pens

Usage

Read Instructions: Review the detailed Instructions for Use that come with your Admelog.

Follow Your Provider’s Directions: Use Admelog exactly as instructed by your healthcare provider, including the correct dosage and timing.

Check Insulin Type: Confirm you are using the correct type and strength of insulin before each injection.

Prepare the Injection Site:

  • Inject Admelog within 15 minutes before or right after a meal.
  • Choose injection sites: upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or abdomen.
  • Rotate injection sites within the same area to avoid skin issues.

Injecting with a Syringe:

  • Wash your hands and clean the vial top with an alcohol swab.
  • Draw air into the syringe and insert it into the vial.
  • Withdraw the correct dose of insulin and check for air bubbles. Remove bubbles if necessary.
  • Inject the insulin as shown by your provider, holding the needle in place for 10 seconds.

Using an Insulin Pump:

  • Confirm if Admelog is suitable for use with your pump.
  • Follow the pump’s instructions for insertion and site rotation.
  • Change the insulin in the pump reservoir at least every 7 days.
  • Do not mix Admelog with other insulins.

Dispose of Supplies: Use a sharps container for used needles and syringes. Follow local guidelines for disposal.

Monitor Blood Sugar: Regularly check your blood sugar levels as advised by your healthcare provider. Adjust dosage if needed due to changes in diet, exercise, or other factors.

Storage Information

Unopened Admelog vials need to be stored in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F (2°C and 8°C).

Avoid freezing them and keep them away from direct heat and light. If a vial has been frozen or exposed to high temperatures, it must be thrown out.

Unopened vials are usable until the expiration date if stored correctly in the refrigerator. When stored at room temperature, use unopened vials within 28 days.

Once opened, a vial can be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature (up to 86°F or 30°C) for a maximum of 28 days.

Don’t freeze the vial and protect it from direct heat and light. Dispose of the vial after 28 days, even if there is insulin left.

For Admelog used in an insulin pump, discard the insulin if it’s been exposed to temperatures above 98.6°F (37°C), which can happen if the pump is in sunlight or direct heat.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Allergic reactions, including reactions at the injection site
  • Skin thickening or pits at the injection site (lipodystrophy)
  • Itching
  • Rash

Serious but Rare Side Effects

  • Severe low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) with symptoms like dizziness, headache, shakiness, irritability, sweating, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, hunger, confusion, slurred speech, and anxiety
  • Serious allergic reactions with symptoms such as rash over the body, fast heartbeat, sweating, trouble breathing, feeling faint
  • Low potassium in the blood (hypokalemia)
  • Heart failure, especially when taken with certain diabetes medications (TZDs), with symptoms like shortness of breath, swelling of ankles or feet, and sudden weight gain
  • Sudden onset of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and high ketone levels in blood or urine due to insulin pump issues

Warnings and Precautions

  • Never Share an Admelog SoloStar Pen or Syringe Between Patients: Sharing an Admelog SoloStar pen or syringes can spread infections. Always use your own pen or syringe, even if you change the needle. This practice helps prevent the transmission of blood-borne diseases.
  • Hyperglycemia or Hypoglycemia with Changes in Insulin Regimen: Changing your insulin type, strength, or injection site can affect your blood sugar levels. This might lead to either high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Always adjust your insulin regimen under medical guidance and monitor your blood sugar closely.
  • Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar is a common side effect and can be severe, leading to seizures or loss of consciousness. This condition can affect your ability to focus and react, which is dangerous for activities like driving. Be aware of the symptoms and regularly check your blood sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes complications.
  • Hypoglycemia Due to Medication Errors: Mixing up different insulin types can cause dosing errors. To prevent this, always double-check the insulin label before each injection. This helps avoid accidental overdoses or incorrect insulin usage.
  • Hypersensitivity Reactions: Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur with Admelog. If you experience symptoms like swelling, rash, or trouble breathing, stop using Admelog immediately and seek medical help. This is crucial if you have a history of severe allergic reactions to insulin or its ingredients.
  • Hypokalemia: Admelog can cause a drop in potassium levels in the blood. Low potassium can lead to serious issues like heart rhythm problems. Monitor your potassium levels if you’re at risk, especially if you’re on medications that affect potassium levels.
  • Fluid Retention and Heart Failure with Concomitant Use of PPAR-gamma Agonists: Using Admelog with certain diabetes medications (TZDs) may lead to fluid retention and worsen heart failure. Watch for signs like swelling or shortness of breath, and consult your doctor about adjusting your medication if necessary.
  • Hyperglycemia and Ketoacidosis Due to Insulin Pump Device Malfunction: Problems with an insulin pump can quickly cause high blood sugar and ketoacidosis. Learn how to manage these issues and have a backup insulin method ready if your pump fails.

Overdosage

Overdosing on Admelog can lead to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and low potassium levels (hypokalemia).

If you experience mild hypoglycemia, you can usually treat it by eating or drinking something with sugar.

For more serious cases, where symptoms include seizures, unconsciousness, or confusion, emergency treatment with glucagon or concentrated glucose may be needed.

After treatment, you should continue to eat carbohydrates and monitor your blood sugar levels, as low blood sugar can come back even after initial recovery.

Additionally, low potassium levels should be corrected with appropriate medical care.

Drug Interactions With Other Medications

  • Drugs that may increase the risk of hypoglycemia: Some medications, like antidiabetic agents and ACE inhibitors, can make your blood sugar drop too low when taken with Admelog. You might need to adjust your dose and check your blood sugar more often if you’re using these medications together.
  • Drugs that may decrease the blood glucose-lowering effect of Admelog: Medications like corticosteroids, diuretics, and some oral contraceptives can make Admelog less effective at lowering blood sugar. Your doctor may need to change your dose or ask you to monitor your blood sugar levels more closely.
  • Drugs that may increase or decrease the blood glucose-lowering effect of Admelog: Alcohol, beta-blockers, and certain other drugs can either enhance or reduce the effect of Admelog. This can lead to unpredictable blood sugar levels, so dose adjustments and frequent blood sugar checks may be necessary.
  • Drugs that may blunt signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia: Medications like beta-blockers and clonidine can make it harder to notice when your blood sugar is too low. It’s important to monitor your blood sugar levels more frequently if you’re taking these medications with Admelog.
