How to Use Contour Next Blood Glucose Monitor?

Preparing the Lancing Device

  • Remove the endcap from the lancing device.
  • Loosen the protective cap on the lancet by turning it a quarter turn, but do not remove it.
  • Insert the lancet firmly into the lancing device until it stops.
  • Twist off the protective cap from the lancet and save it for later disposal.
  • Replace the endcap on the lancing device.
  • Adjust the puncture depth by turning the endcap dial.

Inserting the Test Strip

  • Take a Contour Next test strip from the bottle.
  • Close the bottle lid immediately after removing the test strip.
  • Hold the test strip with the gray square end facing the meter.
  • Insert the gray square end into the test strip port until the meter beeps. The screen will display a blinking blood drop, indicating it’s ready for testing.

Getting a Blood Drop

  • Press the lancing device firmly against the side of your fingertip and press the release button.
  • Gently massage your finger towards the puncture site to form a drop of blood.
  • Touch the tip of the test strip to the blood drop. The blood will be drawn into the strip automatically.
  • Hold the strip in the blood drop until the meter beeps.

Applying More Blood (If Needed)

  • If the meter beeps twice and shows a blinking blood drop on the screen, the test strip didn’t get enough blood.
  • Apply more blood to the same strip within 60 seconds.

Selecting a Meal Marker (Optional)

  • If Meal Markers are enabled, choose a marker by pressing the buttons on the meter when your result is displayed.
  • Select from Fasting, Before Meal, After Meal, or No Mark by scrolling through the buttons and pressing OK to confirm your choice.

Completing the Test

  • After selecting (or skipping) a Meal Marker, your blood sugar result will appear on the screen, showing your levels with the corresponding target range.
  • Remove the test strip to turn off the meter. Dispose of the used lancet safely by replacing its protective cap and discarding it in a sharps container.

Handling LO or HI Results

  • LO Result: If the meter beeps twice and shows “LO,” your blood sugar is very low (under 20 mg/dL). Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions immediately.
  • HI Result: If the meter beeps once and shows “HI,” your blood sugar is very high (over 600 mg/dL). Wash your hands, retest with a new strip, and seek medical advice if the reading is still high.

Warning and Precautions

  • Consult Your Healthcare Provider Before Setting Target Ranges: Always talk to your healthcare provider before adjusting target ranges in your Contour Diabetes app to ensure they are safe and appropriate for you.
  • Check with Your Provider Before Changing Medications: Never change your medication based on test results without first consulting your healthcare provider to avoid potential health risks.
  • Seek Immediate Help for Low Blood Sugar Readings: If your blood sugar is below 50 mg/dL, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions immediately to prevent severe hypoglycemia.
  • Retest and Call Your Provider for High Blood Sugar: If your blood sugar reading is over 250 mg/dL, wash your hands, retest, and if the result is similar, contact your healthcare provider immediately for further instructions.
  • Ask About Alternative Site Testing (AST): Before using alternative sites like the palm or forearm for testing, consult your healthcare provider to see if AST is suitable for you.
  • Wash Hands Before and After Testing: Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after testing to prevent the spread of infections and to ensure accurate test results.
  • Handle All Parts of the Kit as Biohazardous: Treat all parts of the testing kit as biohazardous materials, as they can potentially transmit infectious diseases even after cleaning.
  • Do Not Share Your Meter or Lancing Device: The meter and lancing device are for your use only. Sharing them, even with family members, can lead to cross-contamination.
  • Dispose of Used Strips and Lancets Safely: Follow your healthcare provider’s advice for disposing of used test strips and lancets to avoid accidental injury or infection.
  • Keep the Kit Away from Children: Ensure that all parts of the kit, especially small parts and batteries, are kept out of reach of children to prevent accidental swallowing and suffocation.
  • Read All Instructions Carefully: Before using your Contour Next ONE meter, read all the instructions provided to ensure accurate and safe testing.
  • Check for Missing or Damaged Parts: Before using the product, examine it for any missing, damaged, or broken parts, and contact customer service if necessary.
  • Use Only Compatible Test Strips: The Contour Next ONE meter works only with Contour Next test strips and control solution, so avoid using other brands to ensure accuracy.
  • Do Not Use Expired Materials: Always check expiration dates on test materials and avoid using expired items, as they can give inaccurate results.
  • Store Test Strips Properly: Keep test strips in their original bottle, tightly closed, and away from excessive humidity, heat, or cold to avoid damage.
  • Do Not Test in Extreme Temperatures: Use the meter within the temperature range of 41°F to 113°F to ensure accurate readings.
  • Allow Meter to Adjust to Temperature: If you move your meter to a different location, wait 20 minutes for it to adjust to the new temperature before testing.
