What is Epiduo?
Epiduo (adapelene and benzoyl peroxide) is a prescription medication that can also be applied topically. It is primarily given as an acne vulgaris treatment.
Acne vulgaris is a typical kind of skin disease, which primarily comprises blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
You are supposed to report to your doctor before you start using this Epiduo gel if you have an area of skin cut or sunburned, and such other medical conditions.
Therefore, a pregnant or impregnating woman must also consult her doctor because it is not known if Epiduo affects an unborn baby. A breastfeeding woman also has to inform her doctor because it is also unknown if it passes to the breast milk.
How Does Epiduo Work?
Epiduo gel contains two active ingredients-adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. Combining both ingredients assists with the effective treatment of acne.
It removes the occlusion and opens pores, thus reducing redness, swelling, and inflammation. It works by stimulating some receptors in the skin that induce the cells to proliferate appropriately.
On the other hand, benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria causing acne and also stimulates the natural process of shedding dead skin cells by the skin.
All these components are going to reduce the manifestations of acne by attacking the different causes and, therefore, your skin will appear clearer and better.
Dosage Information and Usage
Dosage Form and Strengths of Epiduo
Epiduo gel is white to very pale yellow, an opaque gel. In each gram, Epiduo contains 1 mg (0.1%) of adapalene and 25 mg (2.5%) benzoyl peroxide.
When applied to the skin, the combination works quite well to fight pimples.
Usage
Epiduo gel is only taken through a topical route, that is, by application directly on the skin, while it is not taken orally, and neither applied in the eyes and vagina.
First of all, the facial or trunk area affected is cleansed with a non-comedogenic cleanser and blotted dry.
Then apply a thin layer of the gel every day, spreading it all over the face areas that get the application. Use about a pea-sized amount per area to be covered like the forehead, the chin, and the cheeks.
Avoid getting the gel on your eyes, lips, or broken skin to steer clear of irritation.
Take note that applying too much or applying too often maximizes the risk of skin irritation.
Always let the gel dry completely before dressing up again to prevent it from bleaching any clothing or hair.
Storage Information
Epiduo gel should be stored at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). No issues will be involved with storage if stored in a cooler location up to 59°F (15°C) or warm as high as 86°F (30°C). Store the gel in a dry environment, out of direct sunlight and moisture, and store it as supplied at as wide a range of temperatures as possible to preserve its strength.
Side Effects of Epiduo
Common Side Effects
- Redness of the skin
- Dryness of the skin
- Swelling in the treated area
- Scaling or flaking
- Stinging or burning sensations
Serious but Rare Side Effects
- Severe skin reactions that last longer than 4 weeks

Warnings and Precautions
- Avoid exposure to sun and sun lamps: Exposure to sun and sun lamps has to be minimal during the period of taking the medication. This is because the gel increases skin sensitivity; therefore it may cause burns or irritation. If you have to spend time outdoors, apply sunscreen and protective garments including hats.
- Local cutaneous reactions: You might have erythema, desquamation and dryness, or stinging and burning which are very marked in the first four weeks of the therapy. These are mild to moderate and diminish over time. If the effects are severe then you can use a moisturizer can reduce the application of the gel or cease it altogether.
- Avoid irritating products: Avoid any other products that may irritate your skin which include harsh soaps, abrasive cleansers, or cosmetics containing a high percentage of alcohol. Such drugs may heighten risks of irritation when used with Epiduo gel and lower your effectiveness in treatment.
- Skin areas to avoid: Epiduo should not be applied to cut, scraped, or sunburned skin. Irritation is likely to spread or even cause other forms of skin problems in such areas. In addition, users should not apply such hair removal techniques as waxing on treated skin as this will irritate the skin further.
Drug Interactions With Other Medications
Use Epiduo gel with caution during the combination treatment with topical acne therapies. Several topical products for acne especially those products that peel, exfoliate, and rub may irritate the skin more.
This has the effect that your skin may become sensitive or uncomfortable. Since there are no available reports about how Epiduo would react with any other kind of medication, it is advisable to ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting with other treatments besides Epiduno.
