What is Finacea Gel?
Finacea Gel (azelaic acid) is used for the treatment of mild to moderate rosacea, which is a skin condition that makes the skin red, and swollen, and causes pimple breakouts.
It helps reduce the bumps and pustules (papules and pustules) associated with this condition caused by the inflammation of the body in response to irritation or injury.
While Finacea Gel will also tend to decrease some erythema redness, its major indications are for bumps and pustules of rosacea.
There is no study about using Finacea Gel for treating erythema alone; therefore, it’s not recommended as a treatment for just this symptom.
If you have rosacea with papules and pustules, Finacea Gel may be a useful therapeutic addition to improve your skin condition.
How Does Finacea Gel Work?
Finacea Gel is successful because of the action of its main and only active ingredient, azelaic acid, in eliminating the symptoms of rosacea.
While it is not precisely known how this mechanism functions, azelaic acid has been proven to suppress inflammation and help clean up the bumps and pimples created by rosacea. When you apply Finacea Gel to your skin, azelaic acid is absorbed into your skin.
This means the gel works primarily where it is needed on your skin.
Dosage Information and Usage
Dosage Form and Strengths of Finacea Gel
Finacea Gel comes as a 15% gel, so each gram of the preparation contains 0.15 grams of azelaic acid. The drug is white to yellowish-white and is for topical use only. It comes only in this strength and thus is appropriate for use in mild to moderate rosacea.
Usage
The patient should cleanse the affected facial areas with mild soap or a soap-free cleanser and then pat dry the face using a soft towel.
The application of the gel should be done twice daily on specific facial areas with rosacea in adult patients and without rubbing on the skin.
Also, the patient should make sure to wash his/her hands immediately after applying the gel. Makeup may be applied after the gel dries.
Finacea Gel should only be used on the skin—do not use it in the mouth, eyes, or any other part of the body. If no effect is seen after 12 weeks of treatment, consult the doctor for review again.
Do not apply harsh cleaners or products that may trigger an allergic reaction to the skin on applying Finacea Gel.
Storage Information
Store Finacea Gel at room temperature, around 25°C (77°F).
Store it in a safe place not that warm and not that cold. Always close the tube tightly after use to conserve the gel.
