What is Fortekor?
Fortekor (benazepril) is used to treat heart and kidney problems in animals, especially dogs and cats.
This medication belongs to a group called ACE inhibitors. These medications work by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.
In dogs, Fortekor treats heart failure caused by conditions like mitral valve disease or weak heart muscles. It helps the heart pump better and can make your dog feel more active and comfortable.
Fortekor is used in cats to help manage long-term kidney disease. When kidneys are not working properly, they can leak too much protein into the urine, which is not healthy. Fortekor helps reduce this protein loss and supports better kidney function.
The body turns benazepril into its active form, called benazeprilat, which blocks an enzyme that causes blood vessels to tighten. Fortekor stops this process, lowering blood pressure and reducing strain on the heart and kidneys.
How Does Fortekor Work?
Fortekor helps improve heart and kidney function in dogs and cats. It belongs to ACE inhibitors, which block an enzyme that tightens blood vessels.
Keeping blood vessels relaxed lowers blood pressure and helps the heart pump blood more easily. In dogs with heart failure, this reduces strain on the heart and improves energy and breathing.
In cats with kidney disease, Fortekor lowers kidney pressure, reducing protein leakage in urine, which is a sign of kidney damage.
It protects kidneys, slows damage, and improves the balance of protein and waste in urine. Once swallowed, the body converts Fortekor into an active form to support the heart and kidneys.

Fortekor Warnings and Precautions
- There is no need to change the dose in dogs with kidney problems, but regular checks of urea and creatinine levels are advised.
- Rarely, dogs show signs of low blood pressure, such as tiredness or unsteady movement. If this happens, your vet may need to lower the diuretic dose.
- Researchers have not tested Fortekor on breeding dogs or pregnant females. Vets should use it only if necessary.
- No data exists on the use of Fortekor in nursing dogs, so veterinarians should use it only when necessary.
- Fortekor increases creatinine levels in cats at the start of treatment as part of the medication’s mechanism of action. Owners should not stop treatment unless other health problems occur.
- Cats should have their creatinine levels checked during treatment to monitor kidney health.
- Fortekor may increase potassium levels, so checking potassium in the blood during treatment is good.
- Sometimes, treatment in cats with kidney problems may require blood tests to monitor decreasing red blood cell counts.
- Researchers have not tested Fortekor in cats with sudden kidney failure, dehydration, or serious heart or liver disease, so veterinarians must take extra care in those cases.
- Researchers have not tested Fortekor in pregnant, nursing, or breeding cats, and veterinarians should use it only if they believe the benefits outweigh the risks.
- ACE inhibitors like Fortekor may harm the unborn baby if used during pregnancy in some animals.
- There are no known medication interactions in cats, but using Fortekor with other blood pressure medications may increase the effect.
- ACE inhibitors combined with NSAIDs may reduce their effect or cause kidney problems, so exercise caution.
- Always keep Fortekor out of reach of children.
