What is Jardiance?
Jardiance (empagliflozin) is a medication prescribed for adults to treat type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, or death and hospitalization in patients who have heart failure.
Jardiance belongs to the drug class sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. These medications work by lowering blood glucose levels by increasing the amount of glucose that passes into the urine.
Jardiance is not recommended:
- If you are allergic or have had an allergic reaction to Jardiance or ingredients in Jardiance
- To treat type 1 diabetes as it can increase your risk of diabetic ketoacidosis
- For children under the age of 18
- If you suffer from kidney disease or failure
What are the Indications for Jardiance?
Jardiance is approved to lower blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart disease or patients with heart failure.
How is Jardiance used?
Storage
Jardiance should be stored in its original packaging at between 68-77°F (20-25°C) with excursions permitted between 59-86°F (15-30°C).
Store Jardiance in a dry place away from light and moisture.
Keep out of reach of children.
Instruction
Take Jardiance orally as directed by your doctor in the morning, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not split, chew, or crush the tablet.
Do not change your dosage and take more than what is prescribed or stop using Jardiance without consulting with your doctor. If you took more than prescribed, contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical care.
If you miss a dose, skip the dose, and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not catch up by taking two doses at once. If you took more than prescribed, contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical care.
Dosage
Jardiance is available in tablet form in these strengths: 10 mg and 25 mg.
The recommended starting dose of Jardiance is 10 mg once daily in the morning and can be increased to 25 mg if required.
SIDE EFFECTS
It’s important to understand that although Jardiance is FDA-approved, it comes with side effects that may or may not affect you.
Before using Jardiance, you should discuss possible side effects with your doctor or pharmacist.
Common Side Effects
Not all side effects require medical attention. As your body adjusts to Jardiance, side effects may go away. Tell your doctor if you experience the following symptoms, and they become severe or do not go away on their own:
- Bladder infection – frequent urination, burning while urinating, or cloudy urine.
- Vaginal yeast infection in females – itching, discharge, or soreness.
Serious Side Effects
Severe adverse reactions while using Jardiance may occur. Seek emergency medical care or call 911 if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Ketoacidosis (too much acid in the blood): nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness, unusual drowsiness, or trouble breathing.
- Dehydration: dizziness, confusion, extreme thirst, less urination.
- Severe allergic reaction: a rash over your whole body, sweating, extreme drowsiness, swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, feeling faint, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, or becoming confused.
- Serious urinary tract infection:pain/burning when urinating, pain in the pelvis/back, or blood in the urine.
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): headache, drowsiness, weakness, confusion, dizziness, irritability, fast heartbeat, hunger, sweating, feeling shaky/jittery, clammy skin.
- Kidney problems:decreased urination, confusion, fatigue, and swelling of the legs and ankles.

WARNINGS & PRECAUTIONS
Before taking Jardiance, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:
- Have any kidney or liver problems
- Are having any surgery
- Have problems with your pancreas
- Drink large amounts of alcohol
- Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
- Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
Ketoacidosis
Ketoacidosis is a serious condition that requires hospitalization and may even lead to death. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness, or trouble breathing.
History of yeast infections
If you have a history of yeast infections, you may have an increased risk of a serious yeast infection when taking Jardiance. It can cause necrotizing fasciitis, which is a rare and serious bacterial infection. It causes damage to the skin in the area between the anus and genitals in males and females. Speak to your doctor if you have had any genital yeast infections in the past. If you develop a fever and experience any severe weakness, discomfort, swelling, or redness, contact your doctor immediately.
Low blood pressure
Jardiance may cause low blood pressure and the symptoms may include dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
Dehydration
Jardiance can cause an increase in urine production and can lead to dehydration, especially if you have problems with your kidneys. Drink enough water while you are taking Jardiance.
Pregnant or planning to become pregnant
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant as Jardiance may harm your unborn baby. Do not use medication in second or third trimester. Speak to your doctor about the best way to control your blood sugar while you are pregnant.
Breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed
Speak to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Do not use Jardiance while you are breastfeeding as it may pass into your breastmilk and harm your baby. Speak to your doctor about the best way to control your blood sugar before you start breastfeeding.
INTERACTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS
Before you use Jardiance, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you take any medications, herbal supplements, or vitamins. it may affect the way some medicines work, and other medicines may affect the way it works.
Jardiance is contraindicated in patients with severe renal and hepatic impairments.
