What is Loprox?
Loprox (ciclopirox) is a topical antifungal treatment. Fungus is a type of germ that can cause infections like athlete’s foot (itchy, cracked skin on the feet), jock itch (rash in the groin area), and ringworm (round, red patches on the skin).
The FDA approves Loprox cream to treat these common skin infections, as well as yeast-related skin conditions.
It is usually prescribed for adults and children with mild to moderate skin fungal infections that need treatment applied directly to the skin. The cream works on the surface and just below the skin, helping clear redness, itching, and scaling over time.
Many patients compare options based on factors like the Loprox price, but the main goal is to choose a treatment that fits the condition and is easy to use as directed.
Loprox Indications and Benefits
Loprox is used to treat common fungal skin infections and help relieve related symptoms.
FDA-approved indications
- Loprox is approved to treat athlete’s foot, also called tinea pedis, which causes itching, peeling, and cracks between the toes.
- It is used for jock itch, also known as tinea cruris, a rash that appears in warm areas like the groin.
- It treats ringworm of the body, or tinea corporis, which shows as round, red patches on the skin.
- It is approved for candidiasis, a yeast infection that can affect moist areas of the skin.
- It is also used for tinea versicolor, a condition that causes lighter or darker patches due to yeast on the skin.
Clinical benefits
- Loprox helps reduce itching, redness, scaling, and discomfort caused by fungal infections.
- It has shown higher treatment success compared to inactive creams in clinical studies.
- Some studies report about 60 percent improvement in conditions like athlete’s foot compared to much lower rates without active treatment.
- Cure or clear skin rates have been reported in the range of about 70 percent or higher in certain groups.
- It works against a wide range of fungi and may also help reduce some bacteria on the skin.
Common off-label uses
- Loprox may be used for seborrheic dermatitis, which causes flaky and irritated skin on the scalp or face.
- It can also be used for mild fungal infections in sensitive areas when other treatments are not suitable.

How Does Loprox Work?
Loprox works by stopping the growth of fungus on the skin. It contains ciclopirox, which blocks important processes that fungal cells need to survive.
Loprox interferes with how the fungus uses certain minerals like iron. These minerals help the fungus produce energy and protect itself. When this process is disrupted, the fungal cells become weak and eventually die off, helping clear the infection.
After applying Loprox, it starts working on the surface of the skin within hours, but visible improvement usually takes several days. Most people notice reduced itching, redness, and scaling within the first one to two weeks, with full treatment often lasting about four weeks.
The cream stays active in the outer layers of the skin, where the infection is located, so it continues to work between applications when used as directed.
Loprox Dosage
Loprox comes in a 0.77% strength, which means each gram or milliliter contains a set amount of the active ingredient ciclopirox. It is available as a gel or a liquid suspension, both designed for use on the skin or scalp, depending on the condition being treated.
Available dosage strengths and forms
- Topical gel 0.77%
- Topical suspension 0.77%

How to Use Loprox?
Use Loprox exactly as prescribed. Wash and dry the affected area before each use. Apply a thin layer of Loprox to the affected skin or scalp and gently rub it in. Use it twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.
Food and water do not affect Loprox because it is applied to the skin, not taken by mouth.
For fungal skin infections, apply Loprox to the affected area and the nearby skin around it. For seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, apply it only to the affected scalp areas. Loprox is not an injection, so no injection preparation or self-injection steps are needed.
Avoid getting Loprox in your eyes, mouth, or inside the body. Do not cover the treated area with tight bandages or dressings unless your prescriber tells you to. Do not use it for another skin problem unless it was prescribed for that condition.
You may notice less itching, redness, flaking, or scaling during the first week. Keep using it for the full treatment time, even if symptoms improve early. If there is no improvement after 4 weeks, the diagnosis may need to be checked again.

| Contact dermatitis, which is a skin reaction with redness and irritation, occurs in about 1% to 5% of patients. | Facial swelling or significant skin reactions may be serious and should be evaluated right away. |
| Pruritus, also known as itching, occurs in about 1% to 5% of patients. | Eye pain or accidental exposure to the eyes with symptoms should be addressed immediately. |
| Less common effects include dry skin, acne, rash, hair loss, and pain at the application site, each occurring in less than 1% of patients. | Any unusual or worsening symptoms after use should be treated as serious and checked as soon as possible. |
