What is Trifexis?
Trifexis (spinosad/milbemycin oxime) is a chewable tablet for dogs that helps protect them from five common parasites.
Trifexis is made for dogs and puppies that are at least 8 weeks old and weigh 5 pounds or more.
You give it once a month, and it keeps your dog safe from:
- Fleas: These small pests live on your dog’s skin and cause itching, skin infections, and discomfort.
- Heartworms: Spread by mosquitoes, these worms can be deadly if not prevented.
- Hookworms: These attach to your dog’s intestines and cause blood loss and diarrhea.
- Roundworms: These live in the gut and may cause weight loss, poor growth, and digestive upset.
- Whipworms: These parasites live in the large intestine and can cause symptoms such as bloody stool and weakness.
How Does Trifexis Work?
Trifexis combines two ingredients: spinosad and milbemycin oxime. These ingredients kill fleas, prevent heartworm disease, and treat common intestinal worms like hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms.
Spinosad is a medication that kills fleas. After your dog takes the tablet, this ingredient enters the bloodstream.
When fleas bite your dog, they swallow the spinosad, which then affects their nervous system and causes them to die. It works fast and keeps protecting your dog from fleas for a whole month.
Milbemycin oxime is a treatment that prevents heartworms and kills certain intestinal worms. Heartworms are dangerous parasites spread by mosquito bites.
They grow inside your dog’s heart and lungs and can cause serious illness or even death.
Milbemycin oxime also protects against worms that live in the intestines, like hookworms, which suck your dog’s blood, roundworms, which feed on food in the gut, and whipworms, which cause bloody diarrhea and other stomach problems.

Trifexis Overdose
A Trifexis overdose can happen if your dog eats too many tablets. Signs may include vomiting, drooling, shaking, or reduced appetite. In severe cases, it could cause tremors or seizures. If you think your dog has had an overdose, call your vet right away.
Side Effects of Trifexis
Some dogs may experience side effects from a Trifexis prescription, although most reactions are mild. The most common side effects of Trifexis include vomiting, itching, tiredness, and diarrhea.
More serious effects like seizures, muscle tremors, and disorientation can occur, especially if the dog is also taking other treatments not prescribed for use with Trifexis.

Warnings and Precautions for Trifexis
Trifexis helps protect dogs from parasites, but it is not right for every situation. Some dogs may experience side effects, especially if they already have underlying health issues such as epilepsy or heartworm infection.
- Keep Trifexis away from children and do not give this medication to humans.
- Do not use Trifexis with high doses of ivermectin, as it may cause serious side effects like shaking, drooling, or seizures.
- Administer at least three monthly doses after the last mosquito season to ensure your dog remains protected from heartworm.
- Test your dog for heartworm before starting Trifexis. If your dog already has heartworm, your vet may need to treat it first with a different product.
- Trifexis does not kill adult heartworms and is not used to clear microfilariae, which are baby heartworms in the blood.
- Some dogs with a high number of microfilariae (baby heartworms that live in a dog’s bloodstream) may exhibit mild reactions, such as trouble breathing, vomiting, drooling, or fatigue.
- Use Trifexis carefully in female dogs that are used for breeding.
- The safety of Trifexis in breeding male dogs has not been fully studied.
- Use Trifexis with caution in dogs that have epilepsy, as it may increase the risk of seizures.
- Puppies younger than 14 weeks old may vomit more often when given Trifexis.
Alternatives to Trifexis
If your dog does not respond well to a Trifexis prescription or you want to try other options, there are several safe and effective choices for flea and heartworm prevention.
Some products target both parasites, while others focus on one. When choosing an alternative, consider your dog’s age, weight, health history, and the method of administration, whether it is given orally or applied to the skin.
Consult your vet before switching preventatives.
