What is Ubrelvy?
Ubrelvy (ubrogepant) is a prescription medication used to treat migraine attacks in adults.
A migraine is a type of headache that can cause severe pain and other symptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.
Ubrelvy can be used whether or not the migraine includes an aura, which is a visual or sensory disturbance that some people experience before a migraine.
It is important to know that Ubrelvy is not used to prevent migraines, only to treat them once they start.
This medication is not approved for use in children. You should not take Ubrelvy if you are on certain medications that affect how your body processes drugs, like ketoconazole or clarithromycin, or if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Before starting Ubrelvy, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
How Does Ubrelvy Work?
Ubrelvy works by blocking a specific protein in the body called the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor.
CGRP is involved in causing migraine pain. By blocking this receptor, Ubrelvy helps to stop the migraine process and relieve the headache.
After taking Ubrelvy orally, it is absorbed into the bloodstream, with peak levels reached in about 1.5 hours.
Dosage Information and Usage
Dosage Form and Strengths of Ubrelvy
- 50 mg tablets: White to off-white, capsule-shaped, debossed with “U50” on one side.
- 100 mg tablets: White to off-white, capsule-shaped, debossed with “U100” on one side.
Usage
The recommended starting dose is either 50 mg or 100 mg taken orally, and it can be taken with or without food.
If your migraine persists, you may take a second dose at least 2 hours after the first dose but do not exceed 200 mg in 24 hours.
Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice and certain medications such as verapamil, cyclosporine, ciprofloxacin, fluconazole, and fluvoxamine within 24 hours of taking a second dose.
The safety of using Ubrelvy to treat more than 8 migraines in 30 days has not been established. Keep a record of your headaches and medication usage to discuss with your doctor.
Storage Information
If you take too much Ubrelvy, it’s important to monitor your symptoms for at least 24 hours, as the drug stays in your body for about 5 to 7 hours.
If you notice any unusual symptoms or signs of overdose, contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room right away.

Warnings and Precautions
Hypersensitivity reactions, including severe allergic responses such as anaphylaxis, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rash, hives (itchy, raised welts on the skin), and itching, have been reported with the use of Ubrelvy.
These reactions can occur minutes, hours, or even days after taking the medication.
While most of these reactions happen within hours of dosing and are not serious, some may require discontinuation of the medication.
If you experience a severe hypersensitivity reaction, you should stop taking Ubrelvy and seek immediate medical treatment.
Overdosage
If you take too much Ubrelvy, it’s important to monitor your symptoms for at least 24 hours, as the drug stays in your body for about 5 to 7 hours.
If you notice any unusual symptoms or signs of overdose, contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room right away.
Drug Interactions With Other Medications
- Strong CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Medications like ketoconazole, itraconazole, and clarithromycin are used to treat fungal infections and bacterial infections, respectively. These drugs increase the amount of Ubrelvy in your body because they inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, which helps break down Ubrelvy. This can lead to increased side effects, so Ubrelvy should not be used with these medications.
- Moderate CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Drugs like verapamil (for high blood pressure and heart conditions), cyclosporine (to prevent organ transplant rejection), ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic), fluconazole (an antifungal), fluvoxamine (an antidepressant), and grapefruit juice can moderately raise Ubrelvy levels. These block the CYP3A4 enzyme, which slows down Ubrelvy breakdown, leading to higher body levels.
- Weak CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Although no specific studies have been done, using Ubrelvy with weak CYP3A4 inhibitors may still require dose adjustments. These drugs mildly inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, potentially leading to a slight increase in Ubrelvy levels.
- Strong CYP3A4 Inducers: Medications such as rifampin (an antibiotic for tuberculosis), phenytoin (a seizure medication), barbiturates (used for anxiety and sleep disorders), and St. John’s Wort (a herbal supplement for depression) can reduce Ubrelvy levels in your body. They boost the CYP3A4 enzyme activity, which breaks down Ubrelvy faster, decreasing its effectiveness.
- Moderate or Weak CYP3A4 Inducers: There is no specific data on the effect of moderate or weak CYP3A4 inducers on Ubrelvy. These drugs moderately or mildly increase the activity of the CYP3A4 enzyme, potentially lowering Ubrelvy levels.
- BCRP and/or P-gp Only Inhibitors: Drugs like quinidine (used for heart rhythm problems), carvedilol (used for heart failure and high blood pressure), eltrombopag (used to treat low platelet counts), and curcumin (a compound in turmeric with anti-inflammatory properties) can increase Ubrelvy levels in your body.
Alternative Medications
If Ubrelvy isn’t the right fit for you, discussing with your doctor about exploring alternative options is recommended.
- Imitrex (sumatriptan)
- Maxalt (rizatriptan)
- Nurtec ODT (rimegepant)
- Relpax (eletriptan)
- Frova (frovatriptan)
- Zomig (zolmitriptan)
- Treximet (sumatriptan and naproxen)
- Botox (botulinum toxin A)
- Memantine
