What is Viracept?
Viracept (nelfinavir) is a prescription treatment that works with other HIV-1 treatments to fight HIV-1 infection. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS.
Do not administer Viracept to children younger than 2 years of age. Take Viracept exactly as your doctor prescribes and never take it on its own. Always take this medication with other HIV-1 treatments.
Before you start Viracept, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, diabetes, or hemophilia. If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor right away. Viracept can affect your baby and may pass into breast milk.
Viracept may also make some birth control methods less effective. Ask your doctor about safer alternatives while taking Viracept.
Make sure to tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal products you take. Some of them may not work well with Viracept. Do not start or stop any treatment without asking your doctor first.
Viracept gives your body strong support in fighting HIV-1, but you need to use it correctly and with care.
How Does Viracept Work?
Viracept works by blocking an enzyme called HIV-1 protease. This enzyme helps the virus multiply in the body.
When Viracept stops this enzyme from working, the virus cannot make new copies of itself properly. This helps lower the amount of HIV in the blood, giving the immune system a better chance to fight infections.
