What is Zocor?
Zocor is a prescription treatment used to help lower bad cholesterol, also known as LDL or low-density lipoprotein.
It contains simvastatin, a type of medication that belongs to a group of medications called statins. Statins work by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver.
High levels of LDL cholesterol can accumulate in the blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart problems.
Zocor helps lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death in adults who already have heart disease, diabetes, or poor blood flow in the brain or limbs. It also reduces the need for certain heart procedures that improve blood flow.
Zocor works best when taken with a healthy diet. It is not recommended for children under 10 years old.
Avoid using Zocor if you have liver problems or if you take certain treatments that may interfere with simvastatin.
Indications and Benefits of Zocor
Zocor helps manage high cholesterol and reduces the risk of serious heart problems. It contains simvastatin, a type of statin that lowers the amount of cholesterol the liver makes.
Doctors recommend Zocor for people who need help controlling bad cholesterol and for those at risk of heart disease. It works best when used with a healthy diet and regular checkups.
What Are the Benefits of Zocor?
Doctors prescribe Zocor to:
- Lower LDL cholesterol (also called bad cholesterol) in adults with high cholesterol.
- Help children aged 10 and older who have inherited high cholesterol, a condition called familial hypercholesterolemia.
- Reduce high levels of fat in the blood, including triglycerides, which are another type of fat that increases the risk of heart problems.
- Treat rare inherited cholesterol conditions like:
- Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia: a severe form of inherited high cholesterol where both parents pass down the condition
- Dysbetalipoproteinemia: a rare disorder where the body cannot break down certain fats properly, leading to high cholesterol and fat buildup in the blood
How It Works
Zocor contains simvastatin, which helps lower “bad” cholesterol, also known as LDL. It blocks an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase.
By blocking this enzyme, Zocor helps reduce the amount of cholesterol the liver produces.
When there is too much LDL cholesterol in the blood, it can stick to the walls of blood vessels and form plaques.
These plaques can make the blood vessels narrow and stiff, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Zocor helps lower this risk by reducing the cholesterol buildup.
A study published in the National Institute of Health has shown that starting statins like Zocor early may lower the chance of heart-related problems and death.
Other studies also show that simvastatin may help protect blood vessels from damage, not just by lowering cholesterol but also by calming inflammation and improving blood flow.
Dosage
Zocor dosage is determined by your age, health condition, and any other medications you may be taking.
Doctors usually prescribe Zocor once a day in the evening because the body makes more cholesterol at night.
Zocor works best when taken at the same time every day. You should not take more than the recommended amount, and never take two doses to make up for a missed one.
For people who need a stronger cholesterol-lowering treatment, other options may be needed if the highest Zocor dosage is not enough.
What Dosage Strengths Does Zocor Come In?

Side Effects
Zocor is an effective treatment for lowering bad cholesterol, but like all treatments, it may cause side effects. Most people tolerate Zocor well, but it is important to know what to watch for. Some side effects are mild and resolve on their own, while others may be more serious and require medical attention. Always talk to your healthcare provider if you notice anything unusual while taking Zocor.
What are the most common side effects of Zocor?
These side effects are usually mild and temporary:
- Headache
- Constipation
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Upper respiratory infection (such as sore throat or runny nose)
What are the severe side effects of Zocor?
Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience any of the following:
- Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (this may be a sign of muscle damage)
- Fever or extreme tiredness along with muscle problems
- Liver problems (watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or upper belly pain)
- Loss of appetite or feeling weak
- High blood sugar levels (may cause increased thirst or frequent urination)
Higher risk for muscle problems may occur if you:
- Are over 65 years old
- Are female
- Have thyroid or kidney problems
- Take high doses of Zocor
- Take certain other treatments with Zocor
- Are of Chinese descent
If you notice any of these severe symptoms or anything that concerns you, stop taking Zocor and call your doctor right away.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Zocor, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take your next dose at the regular time.
Do not take two doses at once to make up for the missed dose. Taking more than the recommended amount can increase the risk of side effects. If you are not sure what to do, talk to your healthcare provider for guidance.
Overdose
Taking too much Zocor can be harmful. There is no known antidote for a Zocor overdose, so it is important to get medical help right away if you think you have taken too much.
Zocor overdose symptoms may include severe muscle pain, weakness, or trouble breathing. Quick treatment can help prevent serious problems.
Warnings
- Zocor may cause muscle problems like pain, tenderness, or weakness. These symptoms can be serious and may lead to a rare condition called rhabdomyolysis, which can damage the kidneys.
- You are more likely to get muscle problems if you are over 65, have thyroid or kidney problems, or take other treatments that interact with Zocor.
- The risk is higher at higher doses, especially at 80 mg daily.
- Zocor may increase blood sugar levels, which may raise your risk for diabetes.
- Zocor may cause liver problems. Your doctor may check your liver before and during treatment.
- If you drink a lot of alcohol or have a history of liver disease, your risk for liver issues may be higher.
- Tell your doctor right away if you experience yellowing of your skin or eyes, dark urine, stomach pain, or feel extremely weak.
- Stop taking Zocor if you experience unusual muscle symptoms, especially if accompanied by fever or fatigue.
- Certain foods and medications, such as grapefruit juice, niacin, or fibrates, may increase the risk of serious side effects.
Boxed Warning and Precautions for Zocor
| Zocor can cause a rare but serious muscle problem called rhabdomyolysis, which may lead to kidney failure. The risk goes up if you take high doses or mix Zocor with certain other treatments. People over 65, women, and those with kidney or thyroid problems also have a higher chance of getting this side effect. Zocor can also affect your liver. Your doctor may run blood tests to monitor liver health and may ask you to stop if any signs of liver damage appear. Some people notice a slight increase in blood sugar levels while using Zocor. If you experience symptoms like severe muscle pain, weakness, or signs of liver trouble, stop Zocor and get medical help right away. |
Contraindications
Do not take Zocor if you have active liver problems like acute liver failure or decompensated cirrhosis. Avoid Zocor if you have a history of allergic reactions to simvastatin or any of its ingredients. Reactions may include serious skin issues, swelling, or trouble breathing. Zocor is not safe to take together with certain treatments that block an enzyme called CYP3A4.
These include specific antifungals, antibiotics, antivirals, and the antidepressant nefazodone. It is also unsafe to take Zocor if you are using cyclosporine, danazol, or gemfibrozil, as the combination may lead to severe muscle injury.
